Preserving Multi-Style Kalaripayattu Traditions

Ekaveera Kalaripayattu Academy, located in Thalavady, Aryad, Alappuzha is a renowned institution dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Kerala’s traditional martial art, Kalaripayattu. Established in 2008 by Harikrishnan Gurukkal, the academy reflects his extensive mastery of the Northern, Southern and Central Kerala styles of Kalaripayattu. Driven by a passion to share the knowledge and values of this ancient martial tradition with a wider audience, he founded the academy to inspire people of all ages to learn and appreciate Kalaripayattu.

Despite the geographical challenges of Alappuzha’s waterlogged terrain, the academy successfully maintains a traditional kuzhi kalari with standard dimensions of 42 feet by 21 feet. The institution overcame major setbacks including the devastating floods of 2018, and continues to function as a vibrant center for martial arts education. Students receive training in body conditioning, weapon techniques, self-defense skills and the practical application of traditional martial disciplines. Through its commitment to authenticity, discipline and cultural preservation, Ekaveera Kalaripayattu Academy has become a respected destination for aspiring practitioners from India and abroad.

Excellence in Kalaripayattu Training and Global Outreach

Ekaveera Kalaripayattu Academy has earned recognition as a distinguished center for comprehensive Kalaripayattu education, offering training in both the Northern and Southern styles of the martial art. The academy welcomes students from diverse backgrounds, including school and college students, working professionals, homemakers and international visitors. Training covers a wide range of techniques, including meipayattu, weapon training, self defense methods and the use of traditional weapons such as long and short sticks, spears, sword and shield, and urumi.

The academy actively encourages talented students to participate in district, state and national-level competitions by providing specialized coaching and guidance. Customized short term training programs are also conducted for foreign visitors seeking an introduction to Kerala’s martial heritage. Over the years, students from several countries including Russia have trained at the academy, strengthening its international reputation.

Beyond its main center in Alappuzha, Ekaveera Kalaripayattu Academy has expanded through branches in Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Kollam, which are managed by former students under the continued supervision of Harikrishnan Gurukkal. With more than 2,000 students trained over the past decade and nearly 1,200 students currently learning across its centers, the academy plays a significant role in preserving and promoting Kalaripayattu. Through training programs, demonstrations, performances and seasonal traditional massage sessions for students, Ekaveera Kalaripayattu Academy continues to uphold Kerala’s rich martial heritage while inspiring future generations.
